Woolwich is a Maine town on the east side of the Kennebec River -- approximately twelve miles from the Atlantic Ocean. The town is bordered by waterways. On the south and east are the Sasanoa and Sheepscot Rivers and Montsweag Bay. Merrymeeting Bay on the northwest is the confluence of five rivers, the Kennebec, Androscoggin, Abagadasset, Cathance, and Muddy -- flowing in from the north and west. Together they continue on as one waterway to the sea. In olden days this section was known as the Sagadahoc River. Woolwich received its name from Woolwich, England -- situated in a like manner on a large navigable river.

Would you believe that the Town of Woolwich will be 250 years old in 2009?

The Woolwich Historical Society and the Woolwich Recreation Committee are making preliminary plans to celebrate the Town's Birthday.  They will be meeting at the Town Office on Thursday, March 1, 2007, at 6:30 p.m. to discuss plans for the occasion.  All residents are invited to attend the meeting and offer their ideas.

Universal Waste Disposal

Town of Woolwich Now Accepting Single Stream Recycling

Pinetree Waste, the current service provider for the Town of Woolwich's solid waste and recycling contract has recently implemented single stream recycling. The single stream technology means that rather than having to separate recycleables, citizens can deposit all items into one bin. All commodities will be sent to Auburn, Mass, where they will be sorted by an automated system and further processed for recycling. In addition to increased ease of recycling, citizens will now be able to recycle more types of commodities. This service will be offered at no additional cost to the town of Woolwich. On top of the commodities that were previously accepted, Woolwich residents can now drop off colored glass and any numbered plastic stamped with the recycling logo. The only exception to this is plastic bags. Bags can get caught in the machinery used to sort recycleable goods. Shopping bags can be recycled at your local grocery store. Recycleables will continue to be picked up at the town office. For more information, look to the new sign posted at the recycling site, or the town web page at www.woolwichme.com. To see an article on the single streaming technology, see the Worcester Business Journal: http://www.wbjournal.com/archives/2006/04-17-06/down_to_one_bin.html
