Woolwich
Conservation Commission (WCC) Goals
for 2006-2007 Produce
a completed draft, or draft proposal, for an open space
plan, including provision
for implementation, to be submitted to the Comprehensive
Plan Review Committee for their action. (Based on three
community visioning sessions held in 2005) Continue
the momentum we have established in encouraging the
development of recreational trails
in Woolwich, ideally tending toward a trail network linking
conservation areas and providing wildlife corridors.

Nequasset
Watershed Project Summer
2006 Volunteers
from Woolwich, Dresden and Wiscasset have walked the
watershed this summer with questionnaires and educational
materials for the landowners within the Nequasset
ìwatershed citizenshipî.
This effort is phase one of a greater study in Maine of all
the ìGreat Pondsî, of which Nequasset is one.
The goals of the project are to inventory situations
potentially harmful to the health of the watershed, and to
encourage good stewardship by educating landowners about
good management practices that will keep the lake clear and
clean. |

Merrymeeting
Fields Opening On
August 13th from 4 to 7 p.m. we will be
celebrating a new reserve on Chopps Point,
ìMerrymeeting Fieldsî.
This new Lower Kennebec Regional Land Trust (LKRLT) property
spans Chopps Point from the creek to Merrymeeting Bay. We would like to link these hiking trails with
trails in other conservation areas in the region, as a first
step in a long term project to developing a town-wide
linkage of conservation areas. The ribbon-cutting ceremony
at Merrymeeting Fields will take place on Sunday, August
13th AT 4 p.m. at the new sign and kiosk on
Chopps Point Road. There will be an
opportunity to explore the trails and a ìLEAVE NO
TRACEî presentation by the Conservation Commission
followed by adjournment at 5:00 to the Dayís Ferry
Church. There, we will have a brief panel discussion with
our legislators on the economic importance of conservation
for Maine followed by a potluck supper and an evening
program (still to be determined). |
